Trademark Registration under the Madrid Protocol

The international application must be based on a registration obtained or an application filed in Türkiye. For 5 (five) years, the international registration will depend on the application filed or the registration obtained in Türkiye. Therefore, if the Turkish application or registration becomes invalid, the international registration will also lose its validity. However, once the five years have elapsed, the international registration becomes independent.
The cost of an international registration can be determined once the countries have been designated. The fees are paid in Swiss francs, while the handling fee payable to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) is paid in Turkish lira.
Within 12 or 18 months of the filing of the application, each designated office notifies the International Bureau of the acceptance or refusal of the trademark. At the end of this period, the trademark owner learns in which countries the trademark has been registered or refused.
The term of an international registration is 10 years from the filing date, and it can be renewed at the end of this term.
If further countries accede to the Protocol later, the existing registration can be extended to those countries upon payment of the fees.
