At the German Patent and Trade Mark Office, a trademark is registered within approximately 4–6 months of the filing date. The registration period can also be shortened by requesting accelerated registration and paying a fee slightly higher than the standard registration fee. A registered trademark is protected for 10 years and can be renewed an unlimited number of times by filing again before the term expires. The applicant can be a natural person, a legal entity or a partnership. Detailed information about the applicant is required for the application. In addition, trademark registration requires a simply signed power of attorney, a representation of the trademark and a list of goods prepared according to the international Nice Classification.
