Trademark registration in Qatar

Qatar is not a member of the Madrid Protocol. Applications can be filed through a local attorney. The registration process is completed in approximately 24 months. A notarized and consularly legalized power of attorney is required. A list of the classes in which the trademark will be used must be submitted. A single-class system is used, so a separate application must be filed for each class. The 7th edition of the Nice Classification applies, subject to conditions. Applications cannot be filed for the whole of Class 33, for alcoholic beverages in Class 32, or for pork in Class 29. The term of protection for a trademark is 10 years. By renewing it every 10 years, the trademark can be used indefinitely. An opposition can be filed within 4 months after the trademark is published in the bulletin. There is a 5-year use requirement. If the trademark is not used for 5 years, third parties may file an action for its cancellation. Renewal is required every 10 years.
